Mother’s Day is coming. Actually, it is really here. You have a few short days to decide what to do for your mom, or your wife (or both!). Sure, we could have taken our usual route with holidays. The guide…where to eat, what to buy, how to make her feel special that one day out of the year when we are supposed to make mothers feels special – yada yada. But, from one mom out there…pour a cup of coffee or tea, and let’s have a good heart-to-heart, shall we? (more…)
As human beings, there is an artist inside us all. Our talents all vary, and for some people, the talent is so great that the rest of us are lucky when they impart it on the world. Art comes in many forms…music, dance and the fine arts, and in today’s world, it can even be digital. But, as any artist knows, the muse does not always “hit” you. We chatted with one local artist recently who has had a resurgence of her craft. Fine Artist, Danielle (Dee) Colucci was happy to answer a few of our questions about what drives her to create her eclectic and bold paintings.
Westchester Happening welcomes you to our feature, the Westchester Wellness Corner! Our guest writer and fitness expert is certified personal trainer, Norma LaVecchia. Do you know how to eat? Don’t tell me what my kids say: “I open my mouth and chew” How much does your diet contribute to your health? We know the answer is a great deal. Can food help prevent a disease or help stop a problem. ..yes. Yet, we still eat and drink what we shouldn’t. I hear people say they eat healthy but are not losing weight or their cholesterol is still high etc. Some of us try but are not sure what, when or how. We are different, so our body needs are different. Sounds complicated if you are not well educated in nutrition. While chatting with a client about food she told me about her nutritionist. She raved so much about her I had to find out more. (more…)
Way back when…when WH was in its toddler-hood, we introduced you to a new pal of ours, Ms. Why-Knot. Oh, she offered up all sorts of advice to other couples in the planning stages of their weddings. And little by little, we got to know her. We were lucky enough to share in her joy, as she went from being Ms. Why-Knot to a Mrs!! Now, she is really all grown up, and we would like to wish her a very happy first anniversary!! This week, the Mrs. Why-Knot blog turns one!
To help her celebrate, we thought we might sit and chat about the past year…as Ms. turned into a Mrs….and get a re-cap on what makes this blog (and blogger Jenn Puja) tick! (more…)
This coming Sunday, April 22, 2012, is Earth Day. Earth Day is a day to commemorate the commitment of the human race to preserve our beloved planet. It is a day to remind us to take green actions…however small…to reduce our “footprint” by re-using, recycling, upcycling and reducing the amount of garbage and pollutants we produce. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, and since then over 1 billion people celebrate Earth Day. It is actually the world’s largest civic and collective observance!
Westchester County will hold various Earth Day celebrations, within various municipalities. There are also things we can do individually to commemorate the day. The county celebration will be held in one of the most central and beautiful outdoor locations, at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. You can head to the Dam anytime between 10am and 3pm, for fun activities and educational experiences for all age groups. There will be live music and entertainment, including Annie and the Natural Wonder Band, and the Solar Punch Band. There will be exhibits and educational information on everything from how to make your home more environmentally sound, to how to run a green and eco-friendly business! There will be a farmer’s market featuring fresh and local produce and products. There will also be the presentation of the county’s Sustainability/Recycling Awards…for environmental achievement and community programs. Parking and admission for the day are free of charge. (more…)
